We visited the church on 16th May 2023 (Tuesday). It's interesting to know that the church was built in the 17th century and the last restoration was carried out in the 1970s. As a result, there were many artifacts found underneath the ground that gave a glimpse of the church's history.

The church is build totally using wood, and it's still well preserved largely due to the dry weather in Lom and the effort of locals.

It's a beautiful church, and please do visit it to admire the interior, it's painting and amazing effort and expertise to build the church in the 17th century.

Just freshly covered in tar pitch the old Stave church has a much darker appearance than most photos I've seen. A short walk from almost all hotels in Fossheim. Old headstones fill the walled grounds. Wasn't able to view the inside due to my travel schedule. If you're just passing through or staying overnight you shouldn't have any problems accessing the heavily monitored grounds proper, but they usually don't open the church doors till 10a. Plenty of benches around the outside of the grounds and parking is also plentiful. Nice bridge on a walking path very close by also. No entrance fees.

This stave church is very easy to get to. There is a very large carpark right outside that accommodates campervans and motorhomes. The oldest part of the church dates from 1150, but most is more recent. There is one stave and some of the murals, which are medieval, but most is from the time when Lom's population started to increase again in the 17th century after being decimated in The Black Death. The church was changed from Catholic to Lutheran in 1608, and the church started to change substantially. Short Catholic masses where the congregation stood gave way to long Lutheran masses, which necessitated benches, and the church had to be extended. A lot of the decoration seen in the church now was paid for by parishioners. I paid NOK60 as a senior (over 60), and I believe the full cost is NOK100. Worth it to see the interior, which is so very different from what we’re used to seeing in the UK. The lady taking the money speaks English and is helpful. There's a guidebook in every language. Also worth reading while you sit in the church drinking in the atmosphere.

Beautiful church, worth a stop. We were lucky with the weather so took our time taking it in.
Didn't pay to go into the church as we have a few big days coming up (and a budget) Will go in next time when we're not in a rush. Glad we stopped for 20 mins to snap pics and enjoy it.

Absolutely stunning! This church has a particular smell , a smokey smell. A smell you wont forget. The outside of the church has beautiful carvings. Around the church lays a graveyard. We didnt go inside unfortunately.
At the moment they are putting new tar on the church which i assume will give it the classical black look of a stave church again.

When in Norway do see at least one Stave church. This one is very impressive, completely made out of wood. The interiors are ornate and again made of wood.

Unfortunately the church interior was closed for the year already. But seeing the outside freshly tarred was so interesting. Amazing piece of history.

Short scenic break on the road from Hamar to Loenfjord towards Vestland. The entrance fee helps with the upkeep of the church ~ e.g. to pay for the tar that costs €30 per can!!
