I visited Gjendebu Mountain Lodge several times when I was younger. This time, as a more senior traveller, I was curious as to how the lodge would stand up to my elevated expectations. I was pleasantly surprised.|The lodge is very popular - the oldest lodge in the area - either as a destination in itself, or as a starting point for hiking in the wild Jotunheimen area.|Access is either on foot (minimum 21 km) from Gjendesheim, or about 14 km from Eidsbugarden, or take the boat from Gjendesheim as I did.||There are several options for accommodation, from NOK 1390 per bed in dormitories to NOK 1660 per bed in 1-3 bunk rooms. The price includes 3-course dinner, breakfast, self-packed lunch and use of the shower facilities. Members of DNT get a 23% discount.||As for my own stay I reserved a bed in a 2-bunk room, but I ended up alone there, even with quite a few people staying there.||There is a dining hall with meal service. When I stayed, there were two sittings, at 18:30 and 20:30. For those who need some food at other times, the reception sells snacks, waffles, and baked goods such cinnamon buns. |Of course, they also serve soft drinks, beer, wine and spirits.||The meal service was nice enough. I was seated with a couple of other solo travellers, which is helpful for conversation.|We were served broccoli soup, beef cheek with potatoes and vegetables as the main course, and a mini pavlova for dessert. The soup was nothing to brag about, the beef cheek was OK.||Don't sit in your room! Go to the common area and get to know some of the other guests!|There is no mobile signal, and no Wi-Fi available for guests. Bring a book or play board games or cards with your fellow guests.||Enjoy!

Har vært her mange ganger, men i år ser jeg at det har skjedd en oppgradering.
Det har blitt modernisert og det meste er tilgjengelig.
Utrolig hyggelig service blandet med den fineste beliggenheten gjør dette til en magisk opplevelse.

Anbefaler middagen med 3 retter. Kokken Christian serverer noe av den beste kulinariske opplevelsen man kan få. 5 av 5 stjerner.

Gjendebu Turisthytte was amazing. The food was really tasteful, and the people working there were serviceminded and nice. Although the logistics regarding the breakfast and the dinner could have been better, this place definitely deserves an excellent rating. The nature was of course beautiful.

Pricey, no WiFi (they seem proud of this fact, but it doesn’t let you do potentially important things and ultimately just limits your freedom), and the showers were cold when I used them in the evening.

The food tastes good when you’ve been eating nuts and bars in the mountains but it wasn’t better than a gas station’s burger.

Very relaxing and chill space and staff. Stayed for an afternoon drink and pastery (fresly made). The place has no wifi and staff is very helpful, which is a good combination. Would highly recommend. Can say anything about the rooms or showers, but toilets were very clean:)

Vi var fire personer og en hund som tilbrakte en natt på Gjendebu, og det ble et minne for livet! Vi kom til turisthytta tidlig på morgenen og fikk sette fra oss de tunge sekkene i bagasjehytta. Verten Øystein tok imot oss med et smil og en prat før vi la ut på tur.||Stemningen rundt turisthytta var nydelig, med blomster, store og små, og enkelte som til og med tok seg et bad i det krystallklare Gjendevannet. |Vi gikk en 15 km tur-retur innover i fjellet – et fantastisk område med mange muligheter for både toppbestigninger og flatere stier. Ikke bare for fjellgeiter altså! Vi fikk også prøvd fiskelykken før vi returnerte for en velfortjent kald øl og en hvil i solen.|Middagen var en deilig tre-retters, og etter en lang dag i fjellet ble det en tidlig kveld. Vi rakk likevel å hilse på de to huskattene og noen trivelige geite. Og kika inn i Gjendinebua – en artig og sjarmerende opplevelse. Med historien som hører til der. (Spør Øystein)||Neste morgen startet tidlig med en rikholdig frokost før båten gikk tilbake til Gjendesheim 08:25. Vertskapet tok seg god tid til å slå av en prat og delte historier om hytta og fjellet , det satte vi stor pris på. Gjendebu er tross alt DNTs eldste betjente hytte. Og mye historie.||Dette er virkelig en perle ved Gjende som mange kanskje overser hvis de bare fokuserer på Besseggen. Ta båten helt inn, det går to daglige avganger,og opplev noe helt spesielt.|Vi kommer garantert tilbake!

Good clean rooms, mid dinner, great breakfast.

The rooms were clean, dry, and no fuss. I had a good night's sleep! Dinner was not great. We had the vegetarian option which was really just a few cabbage leaves and beans, there was no 'dish'. The chef would not let us have the other vegetables so it was nowhere near enough food. Definitely not worth the money. If you eat meat it's probably fine, it looked good! If you're vegetarian, it's not worth it.

Showers were cold but better than the rain! And the whole cabin was friendly, well maintained, and very pleasant to be in. Breakfast was expansive and there was plenty to eat. The view was obviously incredible.

Great spot for a drink at the bar after a long hike, even if you are not staying there.
